PEOPLE

Our Founders

Dr. Rebecca Reubens is an alumna of NIFT Delhi and NID Ahmedabad. She completed her PhD at Delft University of Technology, where she investigated the intersections of sustainability, craft, and design—a focus that continues to define her practice. In 2009, she founded Rhizome, a studio at the forefront of sustainable luxury, encompassing its signature furniture line, the jewellery label Baka, and a portfolio of high-impact consultancy projects. A pioneering voice in bamboo for more than two decades, she serves as a World Bamboo Ambassador for the World Bamboo Organization.  A design and sustainability educator and a published author, her latest work, The Routledge Handbook of Craft and Sustainability in India, cements her contribution to the evolving global discourse on craft and sustainability.

Col Rohit Tyagi brings leadership and strategic direction to Baka. After 23 years of decorated service in the Indian Army, he joined the studio as co-founder in 2022, bringing with him an instinct for clarity, discipline, and strategic insight. A graduate of the Management Development Institute, Gurgaon, he combines military exactitude with managerial finesse. At Baka, Rohit is the force behind the studio’s operational architecture. He creates and oversees the systems that allow creativity to flow, ensures momentum across teams, and orchestrates the seamless, behind-the-scenes choreography. His ability to resolve complexity and maintain continuity anchors Baka’s bold and enduring vision.

We’re often asked who makes Baka.

The answer is simple: people who love what they do—and believe in fairness, patience, and making things that matter.
